In The Studio

The Outer Shore was inspired by time spent exploring the dunes of Cape Cod National Seashore. Having grown up on the Cape, I have always been drawn to the quieter landscapes of the Outer Cape, where sandy paths disappear into the grasses and the beauty is found in the subtle changes of the land.

For this painting, I wanted to work within a closely related palette of greens, blues, and warm neutrals, allowing the colors to move between the rolling dunes and the sky. I kept the rendering simple, building layers of paint and expressive marks to suggest the shifting contours, sandy openings, and vegetation surrounding me.

What interested me most was the feeling of being immersed in the landscape rather than looking at it from a distance. The softness of the sand, the movement of the grasses, and the way the dunes seem to continue beyond what you can see. I wanted to capture that familiar sense of wandering through the Outer Cape, with no particular destination in mind.

About This Piece

The Outer Shore is a contemporary Cape Cod coastal landscape fine art print by Charleston, South Carolina-based artist Ryan Beck, who grew up on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Inspired by the dunes of Cape Cod National Seashore, the square composition depicts a sweeping sandy opening surrounded by rolling green dunes beneath a softly colored blue sky.

Layers of olive, moss, and muted sage green move through the landscape, while broad passages of warm sand, soft cream, and pale blush suggest the natural contours of the dunes. Above, a hazy blue sky carries subtle touches of lavender and pink. Loose brushwork and visible mark-making create a contemporary interpretation of the Outer Cape, where color and texture suggest the landscape without defining every detail.

There is something unmistakable about the dunes of Cape Cod. The winding sandy paths, the low vegetation, and the quiet stretches of land that seem to belong to another pace of life. Away from the busier beaches, there are places where the only thing to do is keep walking and see where the landscape leads.

For those who know the Outer Cape, these are the places that stay with you. The familiar give of sand beneath your feet, the scent of coastal vegetation warmed by the sun, and the feeling of being surrounded by a landscape that has changed very little in your memory.

The Outer Shore holds onto that sense of place. It is a reminder of summer walks, familiar trails, and the freedom of wandering without an agenda. For Cape Cod natives, families who return each year, and collectors who feel most at home near the coast, the painting offers a personal connection to a landscape that becomes part of your story.

With its restrained palette of natural greens, coastal blues, and sandy neutrals, The Outer Shore brings a sense of quiet openness to Cape Cod homes, New England coastal retreats, bedrooms, living rooms, and thoughtfully collected interiors. Its square composition and expressive, understated character complement both traditional and contemporary spaces.

Reproduced from Ryan Beck's original painting, The Outer Shore is available as a fine art giclee print on archival textured paper or stretched canvas.
