In The Studio
Surfer began with the view from above - surfers at rest in an expanse of teal water, their figures becoming part of the larger pattern of the ocean. I was interested in the stillness between waves, when everyone seems suspended for a moment before the water begins moving again.
From an aerial perspective, the relationship between the figures and the water changes. The surfers become smaller elements within the composition, and spacing, color, and open water become just as important as the figures themselves.
Rich teals establish the larger field of water while vivid coral accents bring energy to the surfers and surrounding marks. I wanted the color to feel saturated and alive without losing the quietness of the moment.
Part of the Surf Art collection, Surfer reflects my ongoing interest in the ocean as a constantly changing surface - and in the small moments of waiting, movement, and stillness that are part of being in the water.
About This Piece
Surfer is a horizontal surfer fine art print by Ryan Beck depicting surfers at rest in expansive teal coastal water from an aerial perspective.
Rather than focusing on the action of riding a wave, the artwork captures the quieter interval between waves. The surfers float within the larger waterscape, creating a composition built around stillness, spacing, pattern, and the scale of the figures against the ocean.
The overhead viewpoint gives the piece a graphic quality. From above, individual surfers become part of a larger arrangement of shapes and color, while the surrounding open water provides breathing room throughout the composition.
Rich teal dominates the water, contrasted by vivid coral accents and layered marks. The saturated palette gives the artwork energy while the open composition maintains a quieter sense of balance.
The horizontal format emphasizes the expanse of the ocean and allows the surfers to drift across the composition rather than gathering around a single focal point.
For collectors drawn to surfer art, aerial surf photography and painting, contemporary surf art, ocean artwork, and expressive coastal color, Surfer offers a different perspective on a familiar moment in the water.

FAQ
What does Surfer by Ryan Beck depict?
Surfer depicts surfers at rest in expansive teal water from an aerial perspective. Rather than focusing on a surfer riding a wave, the artwork captures the quieter interval of waiting in the ocean.
Is Surfer a surfer art print?
Yes. Surfers in the ocean are the central subject of Surfer, making it a contemporary surfer fine art print by Ryan Beck.
Is Surfer considered surf art?
Yes. Surfer is part of Ryan Beck's surf-inspired work and explores the experience of being in the ocean through an aerial perspective, expressive color, and the relationship between surfers and open water.
What is aerial surfer art?
Aerial surfer art views surfers and the ocean from above rather than from the shoreline. In Surfer, this perspective turns the figures and surrounding water into a larger composition of shape, spacing, color, and pattern.
What colors are featured in Surfer?
Rich teal is the dominant color of the water, contrasted by vivid coral accents and layered passages of coastal color.
Why are the surfers shown at rest?
The artwork focuses on the stillness between waves. That pause allows the relationship between the surfers, surrounding water, and open space to become the central part of the composition.
What style of surf art is Surfer?
Surfer is contemporary coastal figurative art with an emphasis on aerial perspective, expressive color, open space, and simplified forms.
Does Surfer depict a specific surf location?
No specific beach or surf break is identified. The artwork draws from the broader experience of surfers waiting in open water rather than documenting one particular location.
How is Surfer different from Surf's Up?
Surfer focuses on multiple surfers at rest within an expansive field of teal water, creating a quieter composition built around spacing and stillness. Surf's Up centers more closely on an upright surfer figure and uses collage, layered surface, and saturated coastal color to create a more active composition.
How is Surfer different from Surfer Gals?
Surfer emphasizes the aerial relationship between surfers and the larger expanse of open water. Surfer Gals focuses specifically on women surfers floating together, with their individual postures and shared moment becoming a more prominent part of the composition.
Is Surfer a horizontal art print?
Yes. The horizontal orientation emphasizes the expanse of the ocean and gives the individual figures room to move across the composition.
Where does a horizontal surf print work well?
The wider format works naturally above sofas, consoles, beds, dining furniture, and other horizontal pieces. The open composition can also work within collected groupings of contemporary artwork.
Is surf art only for a beach house?
No. While Surfer is rooted in surf and ocean subject matter, its aerial perspective, abstracted pattern, saturated color, and open composition allow it to work within contemporary and collected interiors beyond traditional coastal spaces.
Is this an original artwork or a fine art print?
This listing is for a museum-quality fine art giclee print of Ryan Beck's original artwork, available on archival textured paper or stretched canvas.
Is framing included?
Frames are not included so you can select a style that suits your space.
What is the difference between paper and canvas?
Paper prints feature a softly textured matte surface designed for framing. Canvas offers the depth and presence of a stretched canvas presentation.
Can I order a custom size?
Yes. Please contact us to discuss your project and size requirements.
