I grew up on Cape Cod, where summers were spent in and around the water, and Scorton Creek was one of those places everyone seemed to know. Jumping from the bridge felt like a rite of passage, and floating with the tide toward the mouth of the creek was one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon.
When painting Scorton, I wanted to capture the familiarity of this place rather than every architectural detail. I worked with broad passages of coastal blue, loose brushwork, and layered greens, allowing the bridge and shoreline to emerge through the paint.
It's a place I remember not only for how it looks, but for everything that happened there. The anticipation before jumping in, the current carrying you along, and those long summer days when there was nowhere else you needed to be.
About This Piece
Scorton is a Cape Cod coastal landscape fine art print by Charleston, South Carolina-based artist Ryan Beck, who grew up on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Inspired by Scorton Creek, the square composition features a small bridge crossing tidal water, framed by coastal greenery beneath an expansive blue sky.
Layers of clear coastal blue move through the sky and water, while earthy greens, muted olive, sandy neutrals, and subtle touches of pink define the shoreline and bridge. Loose, expressive brushwork gives the familiar landscape a contemporary quality, allowing color, light, and atmosphere to take precedence over precise architectural detail.
For those who grew up on Cape Cod, Scorton Creek is more than a place on a map. It's the bridge you worked up the courage to jump from, the current you floated along with friends, and the summer afternoons that seemed to stretch on forever. It's the kind of place that becomes part of your story without you realizing it.
Years later, those memories remain remarkably vivid. The feel of salt water, the sound of friends calling from the bridge, the familiar shoreline, and the freedom of a day spent outside. Some places have a way of bringing it all back.
Scorton was created to hold onto that feeling. For Cape Cod natives, families who return to the Cape each summer, and collectors with a personal connection to New England's coastal waterways, the painting offers something more than a familiar view. It's a reminder of the people, traditions, and moments that make a place feel like home.
With its expressive blues, natural greens, and balanced square composition, Scorton brings a sense of coastal openness to Cape Cod homes, New England beach houses, waterfront retreats, and thoughtfully collected interiors far from the shoreline.
Reproduced from Ryan Beck's original painting, Scorton is available as a fine art giclee print on archival textured paper or stretched canvas.
